Imagine: Overlooking a beautiful lake in northern New Hampshire while getting a good whiff of sweet and savory treats. Sounds like heaven, doesn’t it?
Well, if this is a place you’d like to spend your days, you’re in luck. This little slice of heaven actually exists at Basic Ingredients Bakery and Gift Shop in Bristol.
The bakery, which is owned and operated by Garlyn and Michael Manganiello, has been in operation for 30 years, running a seasonal business (open from Memorial Day-Columbus Day).
“We love living in an area where other folks love to vacation,” said Garlyn, 65. “We love the fact that all seasons give us the ability to be right in the heart of the best skiing, hiking, rock climbing, and water activities. We think we bring that level of adventure to our business and our customers love to see what we are up to next!”
How did this all start?
When the bakery first started, Garlyn was a young mother of five children who didn’t want to deal with the constraints of a traditional 9-5 job. She wanted to share her love of baking, while being available for her family. As a result, she and her husband started Basic Ingredients Bakery right out of their house.
Years later, Garlyn’s son, Mike, 33, joined in on the fun. After graduating from Keene State College in 2007, Mike lived out West for some time. When he made his way back to New Hampshire, he had dreams of opening his own business. So, he purchased a home near the lake and was available to help his mother during the busy summer months.
“When she started talking about creating an exit plan for retirement, I approached her and asked if she would consider selling the business to me,” said Mike. “I took a leave of absence from my full-time job and jumped right in! It was one of those V8 moments.”
What’s the best part about working at a bakery?
Garlyn and Mike enjoy getting to know their customers, bringing new ideas to the shop, and going the extra mile when needed. According to Garlyn, they love celebrating life milestones with everyone who comes through their door.
“I love making connections with my customers,” said Garlyn. “Not only can I help them with food that they might need for a special occasion, but if they are not from the area, I can also help them find local florists, photographers, tux rentals, and so on.”
Want to join the team?
“We love free spirited folks with a good work ethic,” said Mike. “We are open to employees bringing their food experiences to the table… We love working collaboratively with our employees.”
According to Mike, this past summer, they had a young intern from Alabama teach them how to make the “perfect” buttermilk biscuit. From that, they created a unique breakfast sandwich with an egg souffle and bacon, topped with a tomato jam.
“We are always looking for employees with a passion for food – eating or creating,” said Garlyn. “We like our employees to learn front and back of the house skills. Oh, and you will be folding tee-shirts!”
