Where is Your Bagel Destination?

For the past few months I have been on the search for the best bagel shop in all of the Seacoast. My girlfriend, Cece, and I recently visited Montreal where we went to a local bakery that had the best bagels we both have ever had. Previously, we had only been to chain places for bagels, i.e. Dunkin, Starbucks, Aroma Joe’s, etc. These bagels are decent, but often don’t offer the same unique qualities and atmosphere as a bakery or café. We often will grab a bagel and coffee while we do a crossword puzzle or I catch up on the Wall Street Journal. We have been to a handful of places, but we know there are more out there to discover.

Here are a couple places we have really enjoyed so far:

KB’s Bagels

This bagel shop is the epitome of a surfer dude/dudette’s morning breakfast before catching some waves. There is a very “Aloha” feel here the minute you walk in the door. The menu items echo this theme with The Tsunami, The Lollo Pollo, The Johnny Saw, The Undertow and that’s just naming a few. The real catch here is the seating arrangement, as it is mostly couches and recliners, really giving a relaxed atmosphere. If it’s too busy to grab a seat, the beach is only steps away.

Breaking New Grounds

If you’re seeking a very iconic coffee/bagel shop Breaking New Grounds (BnG) is for you. BnG has two locations: Portsmouth and Durham. I was always a big fan of going to BnG in Durham to do homework in my undergrad. This habit has transitioned to the location in Portsmouth with pursuing my grad degree. BnG boasts one of the best mocha lattes I have ever had as well as terrific classic bagels. Both locations offer outdoor seating as well as indoor. Great place to read a book or crunch out a crossword.

Outside at BnG with a bagel from The Works!

The Works

Just like BnG, there are two Seacoast locations for The Works: Portsmouth and Durham. They both have the best bagels I have had in the Seacoast. The atmosphere is a farm to table feel with seats coming from old tractors and booths coming from cow hides. There is a plethora of homemade cream cheeses to choose from the couple the selection of bagels very well.

We would love to hear about your favorite bagel/coffee spot. Please comment below letting us know where you really enjoy going to!

    Hi Joe,

You have to try the secret bagel spot in Dover: Bagel Grounds! It is hiding downtown, but it is worth the search!

      Hello Sarah-
Cece (the girlfriend) and I almost went there yesterday, but ended up not having time before the Pats game. We will have to make it a priority for this weekend!

      Thanks for reaching out 🙂
