5 Easy Ways to Beat Cabin Fever

I’ve always considered myself lucky to work from home (especially the mornings I wake up and don’t have to dig out my car or stress about driving on snowy roads). However, as I sit here half-way through February looking at a fresh foot of snow (the 3rd winter storm in a week) I can’t help but feel a little trapped and depressed. This is usually the time of year when cabin fever starts to really to get to us here in NH. Good news! There is a light at the end of the tunnel and here are some great tips to help you get through this last six weeks and beat the winter blues.

1. Plan your summer garden:

It won’t be long before it is time to start your little seedlings. Use this time to browse seed catalogs and plan your flower and vegetable garden. Dreaming of a new greenhouse or raised flower beds? Start collecting free materials now. Planning ahead will save you time, money, and get you excited about the coming months.

2. Get moving:

This is perhaps the most common tip for beating the blues and that is because it works. Move your body! Recently, I started taking horseback riding lessons again and noticed an immediate difference in my mood. Not only do I get the endorphin rush from the activity but it gives me something to look forward to all week long.

3. Plan a vacation:

Ok, I know that this is not realistic for everyone financially but maybe you have a little extra money from your tax refund or can put aside a few dollars a week. If you take the time and put in the effort you can find some really great deals on a fun getaway. This is a great time to start browsing locations and activities you want to do. Start saving now and at this time next year you can beat cabin fever with some time off!

4. Bring spring into your home:

This is my favorite tip and something that has an immediate affect (and costs very little). There are many easy ways to bring a little spring inside. Buy flowers! Light a spring scented candle (my personal favorite is lilac). Start a mini herb garden on the windowsill. Change out your curtains for bright, cheerful colors. Your living space has a huge influence on how you feel so put in a little effort to brighten it up and make you feel cheerful and happy!

5. Make your summer bucket list:

Bucket lists have been a big trend lately and with good reason. I always have so much I want to do in the very short NH summers and feel like I never get to it all. Start now and make a list of all the summer fun activities you want to have and start plugging them into your calendar. Sometimes you have to schedule fun to make sure it happens! Bonus Tip:

Be social! It can be hard during winter to get out of the house. Either the roads are terrible or you are ready to hit your pillow when it gets dark at 4 pm. Make an effort to go out to a bar, try a new class, or go to the gym with a friend. Going out and having fun with people you enjoy can give you an extra boost of energy and cure that cabin fever.
