9 to 5: A Prop-er Theater Job

Zach Glennon, a member of Plymouth State‘s Class of 2017, is no stranger when it comes to theater. After all, that’s what he’s been studying for the past four years! For the last three summers, he has worked at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Meredith. Now wielding a theater degree with a contract in stage management and a design tech option in props and costumes, Zach is way, way more than qualified for the job.

As Properties Master, Zach is responsible for maintaining and procuring all of the hand props, set dressings, and furniture pieces that are used throughout the season. First, he starts by looking at the rehearsal and performance reports to find out what is needed for the show that is rehearsing and the upcoming show after that. The current show is his number one priority, so he deals with any repairs that might be needed for that immediately! Up next is the show that is in rehearsal. Every day is a grab bag in terms of tasks; some days he is pulling props and furniture from storage, others he’s going out and borrowing from other theaters in the area or even finding things online. Zach even builds specialty props if a show calls for them!

What is Zach’s favorite part about working at the playhouse? Creating something from nothing. He says:

When a prop needs to be built, it’s just amazing to make something from nothing. I am looking forward to doing that this summer. We are putting on Rocky Horror Picture Show from June 14 through the 24th and there are a few specialty items that I can’t wait to get started on for that production in particular.

When he’s not at work, Zach enjoys venturing to the lakeside to relax. Hiking, swimming, kayaking, reading on the beach. He does it all! Also, he likes seeing shows at other theaters and the shows at Winnipesaukee Playhouse that he’s not on crew for.

This season’s schedule is as follows:
