Discovery Center in Concord

I can’t believe we’ve lived here for three years without visiting the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord! My husband brought our five year old a couple of times recently and my son kept telling me every day for two weeks straight that he HAD to show me the place. So we went this past weekend and had a blast (yes, pun intended). Here were the highlights for us:

  • Riding the glass elevator over and over (you get to look at an ackeva towertual fighter jet on display on the ground floor while you’re going up and down).
  • Making a paper “whirly bird” and dropping it from the second floor railing to see how it spins like a helicopter as it falls.
  • The planetarium movie Magic Tree House Space Mission.
  • Watching ourselves on the infrared camera and leaving infrared hand marks on the wall that you can see on the screen.
  • We spent 30 minutes playing with KEVA Planks on a table in the hallway – the biggest hit of the day. This is a preview for an exhibit that starts in May or June that will basically be a room full of thousands of these things that we’ll be able to build with. I had so much fun, I can’t wait that long! I’m totally buying some for us to play with at home. Check out the crazy tower my kiddo built. He would have kept going but we ran out of planks!

Tip: check with your local library to see if they have free Discovery Center passes. If you find you’ll be a frequent visitor, consider their $80 family membership.
