It’s no secret to those who know me that I’m a big fan of living downtown and walking just about everywhere. When I have the luxury of time, I’m always willing to walk the 15 minutes to downtown businesses, meetings, or events if for nothing else than to smile up at the eagle atop the Capitol’s gold dome and run into a familiar face in line to get coffee at one of my favorite downtown shops.
I write these words with a smile although that reality feels a lifetime away. While I still love the Capitol view, COVID-19 has changed many aspects of our lives and at least for me and many of my colleagues, in-person meetings feel like a thing of the past. But despite these changes in our day-to-day professional and social lives, I’m still trying my best to keep these favorite spots in business so hopefully someday we can return to coffee dates and meetings with a newfound appreciation for socialization and dining!
With all that being said, one place I have visited and hope to return to many, many times is the newly opened Concord location of the New Hampshire Doughnut Company. If you haven’t seen the shop in person, it may be because of its location at 2 Capital Plaza, in between Joe King’s Shoes and the School Street parking garage. Once you find it, you will likely be delighted as I was by the transformation from the previous tenant, which was a deli – it’s now a bright cheery place with chandeliers, eclectic art, and the wondrous scent of icing, fresh doughnuts, and coffee.
This is a place that focuses on one thing and does it really well: the doughnuts. Both times I’ve been in I’ve ordered a half dozen, mostly because I wanted to try everything and I know a doughnut won’t go bad in my house. They are open early and then close when they sell out, although I’ve learned that you can order a box the day before and pick up at your convenience, which is perfect for those of us who can’t be bothered to remember to do something like pick up an order at 7:30 am. I’ve come to terms with that about myself.
My favorite flavor from my first order was the cotton candy (pictured below with the pretty purple cotton candy sugar) and the cannoli cream with chocolate chips was also scrumptious. The doughnuts themselves are on the smaller size, which I actually appreciate because it means I can try multiple flavors for any given breakfast/snack/dinner. These beauties are made fresh every morning at their Chichester bakery and are available for purchase there and in their new downtown Concord location Tuesday through Sunday. They also offer a vegan and gluten-free option each week!

A coworker and I also picked up doughnuts last week from their beautiful Valentine’s Day menu! My favorite from this batch was the red velvet cake in the middle, YUM. It was cake on cake on cake with a perfectly sweet and light icing. Their flavors change every week and I have not been disappointed by a single one. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram to view their weekly flavors and see what they’re up to!
