Eight Reasons Why Lakes are the Best

For most of my life, my family has been spending summer weekends at Deering Lake in Deering, NH and it has long been my favorite place on the entire planet. Granted, I haven’t seen the entire planet, so I can’t really make that claim, but I’m keeping the statement. Based on the time that I have spent at Deering Lake, I have compiled a list of why lakes in NH are the best places to be on the planet.

This happens to be sunset at the best place on the planet.

1.  Water Sports.

Wakeboarding, kneeboarding, water-skiing, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, or just plain swimming – if you are a person, you probably like one of these things. If you do not like any of the things on this list, then you probably have never been to a lake.

This is my brother. He might be the coolest person that I know.

2.  Floating.

I love a good float. Recently, I purchased a couple of tubes just for the purpose of floating on the lake in front of my family’s cabin. They even came with cup holders. Imagine! Floating with a beverage. How could life get any better?

This is a stock photo of the exact tube that I recently purchased. It was, in fact, an impulse buy, but I regret nothing.

3.  Lying in the sun.

On a dock. Or on a beach. Listening to water sounds. Or maybe watching people participate in watersports. Maybe with a beverage. Almost as good as floating, but not quite.

Abigail the Swiss Mountain Dog loves lying in the sun. That's because she knows what's up.

4.  Boating.

Boats are exponentially more fun than cars. In a car, you cannot be on water. Also, singing “Pontoon” by Little Big Town makes no sense while driving in a car, but totally makes sense on a lake and in a boat.

This is my sister. She is on a boat and loving it.

5.  Barbecuing.

Obviously, barbecuing is something that can be done inland. But, grilling things next to water is always so much better. And then, eating those things next to water is so much fun.

Now pretend you are looking at this view while eating food that was cooked over a fire. So good, right?

6.  Wildlife.

Lakes in NH are filled with all of the best animals. In our little cove, we tend to get duck families that hang out and eat our blueberries. There are also two loon families on the lake. They make all kinds of fun noises and I’m totally friends with them.

This loon is my friend. We hang out all the time.

7.  Lack of internet/television/connection/etc.

If you’re really cool, then you don’t have a television at your lake. Or wi-fi. The best kinds of people just relax at the lake. Maybe read a book or play board games or just stare contentedly at the water. The lake is the best place for just relaxing.

All of the cool kids play Settlers of Catan while at the lake. All of the cool kids also build towers out of the pieces.

8.  People bring their dogs.

I feel like this is really self-explanatory. Dogs are great and they love lakes as much as people do. Have you ever thrown a tennis ball into a lake for a dog? So fun. Just try it.

These guys are Swiss Mountain Dogs and they live next door to my family. We love them. I might steal them.

Now, this is just a short list of why NH lakes are the bee’s knees. I’m sure that I’ve left a few things out, so feel free to add why you think lakes are the best in the comments. Or, if you’re more of a mountain person, tell me why in the comments!

I love this post and I totally agree that lakes are best! Number 9: No sharks! Number 10: Depth for diving and swing roping in.

Shanon, I did not even think of sharks! The lack of sharks in lakes should obviously be the number one reason why lakes are the best. Thank you for the additions — I love them!
