The Great Big Vegan Adventure

Have I ever mentioned that I love cheese? I feel like it might be a bit of an understatement to say, ‘I love cheese.’ In all actuality, cheese is the very best food on the planet and if cheese was a person, I would start a serious long term relationship with cheese that would eventually become a happy marriage. Unfortunately for me (and probably for cheese), I have made the decision to become an almost 100% vegan.

I started my great big vegan adventure on Monday, March 3rd and so far I’ve only eaten one meal since then that contained animal products. So far, I’ve also been feeling really really great. My expectations of this adventure were to be constantly grumpy (mainly from the lack of cheese), but I’ve been feeling more energetic. As wonderful as cheese (and ice cream, and bugers, and bacon) is, it tends to make me feel heavy and a bit tired. I haven’t felt that at all this week after cutting out animal products.

Now, this decision was not made on impulse and I’ve been slowly cutting out animal products in my diet for the last month, so I didn’t just quit cold turkey (I also quit hot turkey. Punny). I had been a vegetarian (pescatarian, really) for well over a year until I decided to take a meatcation. Meatcations are pretty great, but tend to weigh you down and make you feel not so good after a year of not eating meat. So now, it’s my vegan adventure.

I’ve been taking notes, pictures, and a food journal since Monday. I’ve also been ‘pinning’ a lot of vegan recipes to my Pinterest account (after finally figuring out the point of Pinterest). I am so excited to try out all of these new recipes I’ve been finding. It’s also an adventure to see what kinds of foods a vegan can eat without becoming malnourished.

As fun as this adventure is, I’ve had some trouble since beginning. On Monday, I made a protein shake in the morning to take to work for lunch. At lunch time, I tried to drink the shake and found that it had turned to pudding. Luckily for me, the protein powder was not entirely vegan friendly and I had failed to read the ingredients. I’ve also been craving pizza like crazy. I bought some fake cheese, but it is awful. It makes my face sad.

I made cupcakes out of quinoa, sweet potatoes, and spinach. Food in the shape of cupcakes is so much fun!

Those are just minor setbacks. I’m super pumped to see what my new plant-based diet has in store for me.

Anyone have any resources or great recipes to share?

    Hi, Maggie!

We have TONS of resources for you! We are a natural foods store located in Laconia, NH, and I would venture to say that most of our customers are vegan/vegetarian. Not only do we have a store packed with great food, we also have recipes scattered around the store for some of the ingredients that are less-familiar to most people (like farro, kasha, and some unusual spices).

Our website and Pinterest, too, have recipes and tips available, and our staff is always excited to help! Please feel free to let us know about any questions you may have. Or just come up for a visit sometime and browse around!

Good luck on your new adventure! Once you get the hang of it you’ll be just fine 🙂
