This past Saturday was the final regular season game of the Manchester Monarchs hockey team, it was also my first Monarchs game. Now, I am a fan of any team that comes out of New England/Boston (I am a football girl to the core) and yet have never been to a professional or semiprofessional game. When the opportunity came for me to go to a game I was excited to go.
I have lived in New Hampshire my entire life and have lived twenty minutes from Manchester and had never gone to a Monarchs game, weird right? My friend and I almost went once but when we arrived at the Verizon Wireless Arena (late) there was a father with a young son that couldn’t get their will call tickets so we decided to give them our tickets. But now I can finally say I have been to one, and what a game it was.
First, I had to deal with a fear of heights because our seats were all the way up (GREAT view of the game, not great on the nerves) and that took a solid thirty minutes for me to look at the ice without feeling like I was going fall. I did not know going into the game that the Monarchs and Portland Pirates were rivals and that certainly showed…
Here is a brief synopsis of the game: It was fan appreciation night so there were fun little activities that kids got to do (like a munchkin toss), Monarchs played amazingly (4-0), there were several intense fights, one where a player got knocked out and of course Max made his pop up appearances everywhere. One thing that I really like is how much they enjoy the fans, especially the kids with little activities, t-shirt cannons (although those are fun for everyone), Max, and perhaps my favorite, showing some of the crowd dancing on the big screen between the first and second period.
Although the regular season is now over, it was/is certainly a great night out for all ages. So when the season starts up again I recommend people try to make it to a game. Until then we have the Fishercats!
