Visit A Sugar Shack

Living in New Hampshire has many perks, one of which is the ability to easily get your hands on the sweet nectar that is produced by the trees right in our backyard. Our great state is home to hundreds of sugar shacks and every March they open their doors to the public so that everyone can see what all the madness is about!

Last weekend I visited Syrup By The Sea in Portsmouth to pick up some maple treats and get a look inside. I arrived to find this adorable shack in the woods with smoke pouring out the top and a friendly owner inside, ready to give us the down-low on all-things maple.

The temperature outside was freezing, but inside was warm and cozy with a bubbling vat of maple-goodness and a roaring fire to keep it going. I was given a brief tour of how-it-works and was offered a taste of the sweet stuff, right out of the pot. Holy-yum. It was maple in its purest form. I immediately took out my wallet and excitedly purchased a jug of my own. Maple french toast here I come!!

Benefits of Maple Syrup

Worried about sugar? Nowadays anything sugar-related gets a bad rap for being unhealthy. However, maple syrup actually has some pretty great health benefits. It contains potassium, magnesium, B6 and antioxidants and has been said to boost your immune system and heart health. It’s also a great natural sweetener, which you can easily use to replace refined sugar in baking and cooking.
