Photos: The Oldest Operating Mail Boat in America is in New Hampshire

A friend recently visited New Hampshire and asked to see some of the sights that make the area unique. In researching what we should do, I remembered riding the mail boat as a child, something you can’t do at other vacation destinations. This topped the list of what to see on Lake Winnipesaukee.

The Sophie C. is the oldest floating post office in America and it just so happens to float upon Lake Winnipesaukee in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Each season she provides mail service on Lake Winnipesaukee, a tradition dating back to 1892.

As you set sail across the lake and arrive at each island, you’re greeted by a handful of vacationers and island dwellers eager to grab an ice cream on board and deliver or retrieve their mail. What could be more fun and exciting when you spend your days living on an island.
