Tis the season (and year) for shopping local! I’ve been making extra efforts the last few months to shop local whenever possible, and food is no exception.
Jordan Reynolds, a New Hampshire native, opened Col’s Kitchen in downtown Concord in 2020. And while conditions may not be the best for opening a new small business, Jordan and his team have been knocking their menu out of the park! Col is Jordan’s dog and their restaurant produces delicious vegan, plant-based food 6 days a week. A few friends and I stopped by for a socially-distanced lunch and we loved everything we ate…and we ate A LOT.
First let’s talk about vegan foods. I’m not vegan myself but I understand and appreciate the concept, and I love that Col’s is bringing new and different dining options for the people of Concord. Col’s has a ton of different food options on their menu, so whether you want an adapted old favorite entree or some really great vegetables, there is an option for you. I also know many people with dairy or other food allergies and these options are so nice to have right on Main Street.
I tried the veganized Philly Cheese Steak and it was delicious!! The large sub roll was the perfect vessel for the super-filling sandwich, with large pieces of sautéed seitan (with steak-like seasoning), onions and peppers, and a yummy cheesy sauce. The sandwich was enormous and probably could have fed me for dinner, too!
Not understanding how large my sandwich was going to be, I also ordered a side of Brussels sprouts. These are one of my favorite cold-weather vegetables and nothing beats a caramelized edge and good dipping sauce. Col’s got it right, especially with the flaky salt and bonus garlicky sauce! YUM. These also reheated really well so if you want to do takeout, order these for sure!
One bonus of stopping by close to their opening date was that we got a complimentary sample of a new cake shake! These were so creamy and sweet, with slices of cake blended into the plant-based ice cream and milk, and the perfect little treat after a good lunch. I just visited their website and according to their menu, they have switched over to pie shakes, at least for this season. Obviously I need to try one of those apple pie shakes ASAP! Supporting our local restaurants during the holiday season is especially important to make sure they get through COVID! Col’s is offering a holiday menu to go, as well as their gift cards or “doggy dollars” which would make for excellent gifts for any plant-based eater in your life, or anyone who likes great food.
