There are two reasons to walk around Keene this June. One of them just finished up and the other one is happening soon!
- The Keene Art Walk ran from May 29th to June 7th. It turned downtown Keene into an outdoor art gallery. Sponsored by local businesses, it brought local artists and connected them with the community. The businesses on Main Street displayed art from 60 local artists and turned their stores into temporary art galleries. There were artists painting live on the streets, with an opportunity for the Average Joe to join them. There was also live music, face painting, and a scavenger hunt – with the opportunity to win prizes!! I didn’t get a chance to do the scavenger hunt, but I was able to walk around and check out all the amazing art from artists of all ages, in all type of mediums. I also had the pleasure of checking out some of the live music. If you did not get to go this year, keep your eye out for it next year! It’s a nice way to spend an afternoon.
- The Monadnock Humane Society is having their 27th annual Walk for Animals at the Keene Dillant-Hopkin’s Airport in Swanzey. Walkers raise money for the Humane Society by getting sponsored to walk. Walkers can bring their dogs (but it is not required) and can choose to walk a 1 mile or 3 mile course. Registration begins at 9 am and the walk will be over by 2. The Monadnock Humane Society is a great organization. I know because my work has done some fundraising for them before and we got to meet some of the animals that have benefited from the organization and some of the great people that work there. MHS was founded in 1875 and are a private, non-profit humane organization that receives no state or federal founding. They offer education, classes and shelter and serve over 43 surrounding towns and cities. If you’re free, definitely consider showing up for this event and walking for a great cause! If you are not free, consider making a donation!
