2022 Legislation
House Bill 1294
Stay Work Play position: SUPPORT
What it does: House Bill 1294 requires the existing Commission on Demographic Trends to consider data on race and ethnicity for the purpose of increasing racial and ethnic diversity.
Why it’s important: If we want to attract and retain more people from BIPOC communities, it is helpful to have data that might be analyzed by policy makers and others to assist with this.
Status: This bill is currently awaiting a vote in the House Executive Departments and Administration Committee.
House Bill 1414
Stay Work Play position: SUPPORT
What it does: House Bill 1414 requires the Director of the State Police to submit an annual report on traffic violations.
Why it’s important: Collecting such data makes it easier to determine the rates at which certain communities are arrested/cited by police. This is another bill whose aim is to increase law enforcement accountability so that trust with law enforcement is also increased as a result. And this, in turn, is necessary if we want to attract and retain more people from BIPOC communities.
Status: This bill is awaiting a vote in the House Criminal Justice Committee.
