Trains to become a Medical Assistant Apprentice. Learns to perform clinical tasks of a medical assistant while preparing for the national certification exam. The MA Trainee is a temporary role for those actively enrolled in the D-H WRI program. Upon successful completion trainees transition to apprentices. Responsible for learning and practicing clinical duties such as taking vital signs, giving injections, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, drawing blood, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms at an outpatient care site. Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills. Learns to greet, check in patients, and notify appropriate provider. Learns to prepare patient, room and equipment for procedures and exams. Learns to take and record vital signs, informing provider of patient vital signs and concerns. Learns to recognize and treat emergency patients as a priority, assist with patient examinations and treatments. Learns to handle patient situations over the phone, schedule appointments and procedures with medical professionals. Learns to understand limitations in dealing with patients over the phone, and involves nursing staff and providers. Learns to register new patients and establishes a medical record.
